Healthcare is now a top priority for Express Logistics Providers

Some of the biggest logistics companies in the world—like DHL, FedEx, and UPS—are actually putting a lot of money and effort into the healthcare business. Why? Because shipping medical supplies, medicines, and vaccines needs special care, that means more value and higher profits.

DHL’s Big Investment

DHL recently announced it will invest $2.2 billion over the next five years to grow its healthcare logistics business. About half of that money will go into improving services in the Americas, while the rest will be used in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

They want to double their healthcare revenue to $10.8 billion by 2030. DHL is upgrading warehouses, building more cold-storage spaces, and buying temperature-controlled vehicles to handle sensitive medical items like vaccines and medicines.

They also bought a U.S.-based company, CryoPDP, which specializes in delivering medical supplies for clinical trials and biotech companies.

FedEx’s Tech Advantage

FedEx is also making big moves. FedEx is also taking big steps. They expect to bring in $400 million in new healthcare business in just a few months. They have built high-tech tools like FedEx Surround that tracks packages using smart sensors in real-time.  They have built high-tech tools like FedEx Surround, which tracks packages in real-time using smart sensors.

These sensors send updates every few seconds, so companies always know where their medical packages are—and if something might go wrong, they get alerts instantly.

This is a game changer for companies shipping temperature-sensitive items, where even small delays can be a big deal.

UPS Eyes Big Growth Too

UPS is also making sure to stay in the healthcare game by doubling their healthcare revenue to $20 billion by 2026. For that now they have acquired Frigo-Trans and BPL, two European companies that focus on cold-chain logistics for medicines and biotech products.

So what’s the big deal about healthcare logistics? Unlike regular deliveries, medical items need extra care—like staying cold, being delivered quickly, and having full tracking.  It will eventually be a great thing for logistics companies as now they can charge more for providing premium services.

With the global population aging and needing more medical care, this market is only getting bigger. And the big logistics players are making sure they are ready.
