Sean Duffy, who used to be a representative from Wisconsin, just got tapped by Trump to head the Department of Transportation (DOT).
Duffy isn’t just some random pick. He was in Congress for nine years and served on the Financial Services Committee, even leading the subcommittee on Insurance and Housing. He’s also been a familiar face on Fox News, hosting shows like “The Bottom Line” and doing political commentary across their platforms. Clearly, Trump sees him as someone who aligns with his vision for the next term.
It’s a big move because the DOT handles a massive $110 billion budget, so whoever runs it has huge influence over highways, airports, and even truck parking.
Trump actually made a statement about Duffy’s appointment. He said Duffy will focus on making America’s transportation infrastructure competitive, competent, and even beautiful. Trump also mentioned that Duffy would roll back diversity and inclusion initiatives for pilots and air traffic controllers, claiming it’s about improving safety.
The trucking world is anticipating this development. The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA), which represents small trucking businesses, is already throwing its support behind Duffy. They’re hoping he’ll help with truck parking issues, cutting down on freight fraud, and rolling back what they call unnecessary regulations. They’ve even called for the Senate to confirm him quickly, which tells they’re eager to get things moving.
CNN, however, reminded everyone that back during Trump’s first term, Duffy introduced a bill that would have expanded Trump’s authority to impose tariffs. Republicans at the time weren’t into it, so it didn’t go anywhere, but Trump was apparently a fan. With this nomination, it feels like Duffy’s getting a second chance to align closely with Trump’s economic agenda.
It’s also worth noting that Duffy wasn’t the only name being floated for this role. There were others in the mix, like Representatives Sam Graves, Garret Graves, and Troy Nehls. But it looks like Trump is doubling down on someone he knows and trusts.
The DOT is no small gig—it impacts everything from how goods move across the country to how safe flights are. Many are looking forward to see how this plays out and what changes come under his leadership, especially with trucking and tariffs being such hot topics.
