Averitt Expands San Antonio Operations To Meet Rising Demand

Averitt, a major transportation and logistics company based in Cookeville, Tennessee, has recently expanded its facilities in San Antonio, Texas. This expansion includes a huge new warehouse for distribution and fulfillment, which covers 85,000 square feet (about the size of 1.5 football fields). This warehouse is located along the I-35 highway, a major road that runs from Mexico through Texas and all the way up north in the United States.

Besides the new warehouse, Averitt expanded its cross-dock terminal in San Antonio. A cross-dock terminal is a place where trucks load and unload goods quickly without the need to store them. With 80 doors for trucks to load and unload, this facility is now even more efficient. They’ve also built a new maintenance facility to keep their trucks in good working condition. Additionally, Averitt plans to open a drive-through fueling station at this site next year to make it easy for their trucks to refuel on location.

The reason Averitt and other logistics companies are growing in places like San Antonio is because of “nearshoring.” Nearshoring is a trend where companies move their manufacturing and production closer to their main markets. In this case, companies that used to have factories far away (like in Asia) are now moving them closer to the U.S., often to Mexico. This shift makes it faster and cheaper to move goods to American customers.

Ed Habe, Averitt’s vice president of Mexico sales, explains that San Antonio’s location is key. San Antonio is along the I-35 corridor, which connects the U.S. and Mexico and is one of the busiest routes for transporting goods. San Antonio is also about 160 miles from Laredo, which sits right on the U.S.-Mexico border. Companies like Toyota and Navistar have factories in San Antonio partly because they can easily send products back and forth across the border.

Averitt is part of this growing demand for cross-border logistics. Over 8,000 workers, 4,500 trucks, and 14,750 trailers spread across 85 locations in the U.S. Other companies like Kuehne+Nagel, Ryder System, Maersk, and Uber Freight are also expanding their facilities in Texas to handle this increased demand for cross-border transportation and warehousing.
