Fuel payments just got an upgrade, Piston Technologies hits a milestone in smart, secure solutions. The Silicon Valley-based tech startup has secured $6.1 million in seed funding, bringing its total funding to $7.5 million (including $1.4M in earlier pre-seed investment). This boost will help them take their app-based fuel payment system to the next level.

Right now, Piston’s app is available in 25 states, used by over 120 fleets across 800 gas stations. The goal? On track to expand to over 14,000 fuel stations by the close of this year. That’s a big leap—and one that shows just how serious Piston is about changing the game in fuel payments.

So what makes Piston different?

No physical cards, no hidden fees – Unlike old-school fuel cards, Piston doesn’t come with extra baggage or unexpected costs.
Quick and secure payments – Drivers simply scan a dynamic QR code using their smartphone at the pump or point-of-sale terminal.
Built-in fraud prevention – With geolocation checks and real-time validation, it’s safer than traditional cards, which can be misused if stolen.

Easy for carriers and fleets – The app is completely fee-free for transactions, helping businesses save money while simplifying fuel payments.

Piston’s CEO and co-founder, Vikram Sekhon, explained that their network already includes all major fuel brands, making it super accessible for carriers on the road. Sekhon and co-founder Shivam Shah created the platform to do away with outdated systems that often include hidden charges and lack transparency.

While fuel card skimming and security concerns grow in the traditional space, app-based systems like Piston are catching on quickly. And they’re not alone—other players like ONRAMP, Relay Payments, and Circle K are also exploring mobile-based fleet payments.
