USPS now handles far fewer letters than it used to.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the service is still required by law to deliver mail to every address in the country, operate more than 33,000 post offices, and provide service six days a week. Many of these services lose money, as most delivery routes are unprofitable, more than half of the post offices don\u2019t cover their costs, and delivering to remote areas is extremely expensive.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Cant_USPS_Solve_This_Quickly\"><\/span>Why Can\u2019t USPS Solve This Quickly?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Unlike private companies, USPS has strict rules:<\/p>\n<p>It cannot freely set its prices<\/p>\n<p>It has limits on how often it can raise rates<\/p>\n<p>It must fund employee retirement costs from its own revenue<\/p>\n<p>It has a fixed borrowing limit of $15 billion<\/p>\n<p>Steiner argued that these rules make it almost impossible for USPS to break even.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Are_the_Possible_Solutions\"><\/span>What Are the Possible Solutions?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Steiner said Congress needs to decide one of three paths:<\/p>\n<p>Reduce services (fewer post offices or delivery days)<\/p>\n<p>Raise prices or provide taxpayer support<\/p>\n<p>Relax rules so USPS can operate more like a business<\/p>\n<p>He emphasized that continuing as it is now is not an option.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_USPS_Is_Already_Doing\"><\/span>What USPS Is Already Doing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Postal Service has started making changes on its own:<\/p>\n<p>Cutting costs by improving its delivery network<\/p>\n<p>Reducing workforce and transportation expenses<\/p>\n<p>Modernizing facilities and systems<\/p>\n<p>Expanding package delivery services<\/p>\n<p>It is also pushing for higher stamp prices, saying even with increases, U.S. postage would still be cheaper than in many other countries.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Additional_Challenges_and_the_Way_Forward\"><\/span>Additional Challenges and the Way Forward<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Another major concern is the growing gap between costs and revenue. Even though package deliveries from online shopping have increased, they come with strong competition from private companies, which limits how much profit USPS can make. At the same time, the organization continues to add new delivery addresses every year, which increases its workload and expenses.<\/p>\n<p>There are also long-term financial pressures, such as pension obligations and healthcare costs for retired employees. These expenses take up a large part of USPS&#8217;s funds, leaving less money for daily operations and improvements.<\/p>\n<p>Experts believe that without policy changes, USPS may struggle to keep up with modern demands. However, if given more flexibility, it could adapt better by improving services, investing in technology, and finding new ways to generate revenue while continuing to serve the public.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Bottom_Line\"><\/span>The Bottom Line<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>USPS says it is trying to improve, but it needs help.
